Loewe collaborates with textile designer John Allen

The carpet designs of master weaver and knitter John Allen, characterized by an extraordinary sense of color and abstracted scenes of the British landscape, are the starting point of a special collection of summer accessories, amongst which colorful beach towels, wallets and funny key rings, available at Loewe boutiques from this spring. In occasion of the latest project enhancing the work of an artist of exceptional value, Creative Director Jonathan Anderson selected three of Allen’s bucolic designs — “Falling Leaves”, “Cornish Harbour” and “Pink House in Cumbria” — to be used as prints on totes, duffle bags, scarves and largebeach towels.

A range of colors from the artist’s distinctive palette — including sand, pomegranate and vibrant hues of blue and pink — have been reproduced on wallets and purses in calf leather and exotic skins, as well as on espadrilles and the coveted zipped T-Pouch clutch.  John Allen was born in 1934 and trained to be a dental technician before devoting himself to designing artistic textiles for the fashion industry. He studied at the Camberwell School of London and at the Royal College of Art, where he set-up the knitting department and taught until his retirement in 1989, when he chose to focus solely on his creative practice. In 1985, Allen was appointed member of the RCA. John Allen has already collaborated with Anderson’s brand. Anderson said: “I chose this first contamination between J.W. Anderson and LOEWE because I wish as many people as possible kwon his art.”

For the artist, the collaboration with Loewe is an important personal milestone. As part of the launch, Loewe is releasing 1,200 limited edition books, with photographs shot in John Allen’s South Woodford home. The book also features an in-depth interview with Allen, and it is available in Loewe boutiques. Part of Loewe Spring Summer 2015 collections, the John Allen range is the latest in a series of collaborations showcasing the work of artists and artisans the Spanish house believes in, reaffirming LOEWE as the brand that offers the widest range of products of cultural significance, connecting different categories and expertise – Past, Present and Future – through modern and authentic craftsmanship.
