Hotel Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita, a journey back in time
A joint project that becomes a reality in two wonderful places. Sleeping among the Sassi di Matera, the historic caves of Matera, or in Santo Stefano, the Middle Ages village in Abruzzi.Sextantio recovers the original spirit of the historical patrimony and landscape and turns it into a resort, an Albergo Diffuso. The mission is to respect the identity of the locations with an extremely conservative approach, reproducing all the elements of past civilizations and the cultures.
Two different projects embracing the same goal: to enhance the charm of places of unchanged value over time. In Santo Stefano the priority has been to restore the ancient village and its seductive landscape, for the Sassi di Matera, instead, it was important to maintain the architecture and local materials cultures, the original volumes of the stones. A manic attention even in the choice of furniture. Every piece is handmade using traditional fabrics and recovered materials. The result is not just a mere copy of the original furniture, it’s a revisitation of the past in its most subliminal evocations, a symbolic approach to revive one of the most suggestive place of Italy. The Albergo Diffuso is located in the most ancient area of the Sassi, mostly characterized by caves with very few architectural outcrops.
Guests can choose among 19 rooms, almost all set inside the caves, included a reception and a huge shared cave for the many conviviality events. Hotel Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is a little jewel to be discovered, for those in search of new emotions, like only the breathtaking view of the terrace overlooking the Murgia National Park can give. Guests are welcomed by fresh fruit and cool water served in the room. In the evening, some typical local liquors and, for those who choose the romantic weekend, the room is warmed by candlelight and perfumed with local essences. In the morning, breakfast is served in a former church of the 13th century, entirely sculpted out of rock.
