Mater. Symbolic itineraries through maternity in Parma

A journey to explore maternity through 170 works. From 8 march to 28 June 2015, the exhibition Mater. Symbolic itineraries through maternity, shown in Parma at the Governor’s Palace, under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic and sponsored by the Municipality of Parma, will explore the sacredness of maternity. The exhibition displays a selection of artistic and archeological masterpieces (from Rosso Fiorentino, Pinturicchio, Veronese, Moretto, to Hayez, Casorati, Ernst, Giacometti, up to Michelangelo Pistoletto and Bill Viola) coming from important museum and Italian collections, and insured for about 100 million Euro by the Reale Mutua Assicurazioni. The exhibition is divided in four different sections. The first section, titled “Cosmogonies and mother-Goddesses: maternity of the Earth and maternity of the Heaven”,  displays prehistoric figurines of the Great mothers, up to Greek and Roman mythology about fertility. The second section “The maternity revealed”, begins to look at the religious, spiritual, and transcendent aspects of maternity, after the Council of Nicea in 325 d.C. The third section “From Holy to Bourgeois Motherhood” shows how the family changed in the nineteenth century. The last section, “The short century: searching for a new female archetype” covers the 20th century through works about maternity by Mimmo Rotella, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Max Kuatty, Bill Viola, Mat Collishaw, up to the famous Crepax’s icon Valentina. Mater.
